Alright so today I did something I swore I'd never do, I drove one of these..

As an ST owner, the GTI has become my mortal enemy but, even before that I haven't liked the 'culture' that surrounds these cars.

For all intents and purposes, every GTI owner/driver I've known has been a dickwad. Shocker stickers, flat brim hat, and just all around bro status. But today I got the chance to test drive a GTI for a buddy of mine.

Honestly it's... NICE. Fuuck, I want to hate this car but it is so simple and easy to drive, incredibly smooth everywhere you go. It didn't feel sporty like I expected but it was sooo much nicer than I could have imagined/wanted.

Fuckin' VW, nice fuckin' job. I'm impressed.

I can't stand the plaid interiors. Yeah they've been doing it forever or its a throw back to the old school style - but it just flat out looks ugly and hipster ish. And I say that cautiously since someone on here just swapped out their seats to this (though it was an older car) but it just looks bad in my opinion on the modern cars.

Also the non-recaro FoST seats are ugly too. They look like bloated office chairs you find in a call center cubicle farm. The recaros look amazing.

There. I'm done. Fuck it , my Sebring has better looking seats. There I said it. someone give me a mic to drop!

As a Honda guy I wanted to hate all VW's but after driving a few, I like... some of them. Especially ones with leather seats and 200hp diesel engines gggrrrrrr chooo.

The GTI just felt kind of lazy to me. It felt solid but not like the sporty, fun little monster I expected.

Yup, GTI's not as sharp. It's also less reliable (huge PITA) and has way worse brake fade. It is, however, much quieter, better on the highway, fits my dog better, and more efficient.

The FiST is more of a classical hot hatch, while the modern GTI emphasizes the practical side of the segment. I'd buy a FiST if I wasn't too tall to fit comfortably in the Recaro seats.

This is the first I've heard GTI owners stereotyped that way. The Mk6 is quite a bit better than the Mk5, and the Mk7 is better than the MK6.. They're both good cars. I'm not sure why there's so much hate between the two groups of fanbois. The GTI is more refined. The ST is a bit more wild. Back and forth and back and forth.. it is like the standard vs. automatic debate these days. Needs no more re-hashing.

I drove one. It was an MKV 5dr DSG. Lot nicer than I thought it would be, but the black plastic on the radio/center console was fading, and I just don't trust that damn engine. Got a Civic instead. That motor is pretty good though. Had a little lag down low, but in its stride it went and felt NA.
